Acne, commonly known as pimples, is a variety of skin eruptions ranging from whiteheads and blackheads to solid red bumps and pustules. The pimples result because the sebaceous glands, the oil glands in the skin which are connected to hair follicles, secrete an oily material which normally softens and lubricates the skin. But these do not become active till puberty. Under the influence of hormones released at puberty, there glands burst into activity, excreting the oil up through the follicle on to the skin surface and causing the face, especially the nose, to become shiny. This problem is more or less normal during adolescence. Acne is caused when the outlet of the gland get plugged with a lump of oil and dead cells. Bacteria act upon it and further aggravate the process. The free fatty acids and other substances produced by these bacteria cause irritation to the surrounding skin.
Acne can be experienced in childhood and later during the adult years. However, it is more common between the years 13-18. Almost 80% of teenagers have acne.
The black spots are scars that are left behind by the pimples after they have dried. To lighten them, use chokker, mixed with rosewater, raw turmeric and milk. Apply it on the face and neck region and scrub it off till the flakes fall off the face, using circular movements of the fingers. The small holes on your skin are the open, enlarged pores. Splash ice cold water on your face three times a day. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Avoid fried foods, sweets and aerate foods. Also, drink 5-7 liters of water per day.
