How often should I feed my baby and what if I'm not able to?

Initially, feed your baby as often as possible, nursing for about 10 minutes, increasing gradually. Later, follow a schedule both you and your baby are comfortable with. But if your baby consistently wakes up either or gets more fretful it could indicate that your baby is not getting enough. Various factors could lead to decrease in lactation. Your doctor is your best guide at all time.

Practical points for nursing mothers:
1. Only a happy relaxed mother can achieve successful lactation.
2. Breastfeed your baby immediately after birth.
3. If an infant’s eyes start watering, put mother milk as eye drop.
4. Breastfeed your baby for as long as possible, preferably for two years.
5. Continue to breast feed your child when he is ill, especially if he had diarrhea.
6. Weigh your child every month.
7. Start to feed your young child soft semi-solid food when he is five months old.
8. Give food to your child five or six times a day.
9. Keep flies off food Use boiled water.
10. Wash your hands and your child’s hands before feeding.
